Whitehead Lighthouse is located on Whitehead Island off the coast of St. George, Maine. The station was established in 1807. The current tower, built in 1852, replaced the original structure and stands 41 feet tall, casting its light 76 feet above sea level. The lighthouse played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of vessels navigating the waters of Penobscot Bay, especially during the 19th and early 20th centuries when maritime traffic was vital to the region’s economy. In 1982, the lighthouse was automated, marking the end of the era of resident lighthouse keepers.
